6 Signs that your Odoo system needs an audit
Odoo systems grow through custom developments, apps from the Odoo App Store, modules from freelancers or Odoo partners, Odoo Studio fields, and increasingly through AI-generated code. Each customization creates new dependencies on the Odoo core and builds technical debt, which poses a risk for security vulnerabilities and complex system architecture. We will show you how to recognize when it is time for a professional code and security audit in this article.
The Odoo business software is known for its flexibility and modularity. Many companies start with the standard, make adjustments to processes here and there, add new modules, and develop customized logic to tailor Odoo ERP to their specific needs. What is initially cost-effective and technically and practically simple to implement can over the years turn into a black box: code that needs to be adjusted with each version upgrade, security vulnerabilities, and a system architecture that can no longer be traced. At the same time, maintenance and support costs increase.
6 Red Flags for legacy issues in your Odoo system
If any of the following scenarios sound familiar to you, we recommend a targeted Odoo system and security audit.
1. Exploding Maintenance and Support Costs
If support tickets and development hours continuously increase, even though the processes do not change, the cause may lie in the codebase: duplicate logics, overridden standard methods, tightly coupled modules. Every change creates regressions elsewhere.
2. Undocumented in-house developments and Odoo Studio customizations
No one in the company knows exactly what happens in the historically grown custom modules. The knowledge resides with former employees, freelancers, or a previous partner. Documentation, automated tests, and version control are lacking. Odoo Studio customizations exacerbate this issue: they are stored in the database instead of in a Git repository and often need to be manually reapplied during upgrades.
3. Odoo Upgrades Are Constantly Delayed
Custom modules break during version jumps because the ORM API, views, and data model change between Odoo versions. Odoo only supports the last three major versions at a time. If many versions are skipped, the migration effort increases and the further development of the Odoo system is blocked.
4. Unchecked Third-Party Apps from the Odoo App Store
A publication in the Odoo App Store is not proof of code quality or security. Typical findings: uncontrolled sudo() calls, controllers without access checks, SQL queries bypassing the ORM, lack of compatibility with the Odoo target version, and conflicts with existing modules. Additionally, there are licensing issues, such as OPL-1 versus LGPL-3 or AGPL-3, with restrictions on use and redistribution.
5. AI-generated code without review
Code snippets or entire modules from AI code assistants like GitHub Copilot, Claude, or ChatGPT often work right away but ignore Odoo-specific conventions: faulty inheritance via _inherit, missing Record Rules, direct SQL accesses, outdated API patterns from earlier Odoo versions, unnecessary privilege escalation via sudo(). Without code review by experienced Odoo developers, these patterns make their way into the production environment and jeopardize security standards.
6. Unclear access rights and permissions
User groups, Access Control Lists (ACLs), and Record Rules have been expanded over the years but never cleaned up. Portal accesses, public routes, and API endpoints (XML-RPC, JSON-RPC, REST interfaces) are not inventoried. This makes it impossible to demonstrate internally or to the auditing body or data protection (revDSG, GDPR) who accesses sensitive data.
The solution from braintec: Clean up, simplify, standardise
Our experience from over 400 Odoo projects has taught us that reverting to the standard is often the most sustainable approach: Custom code can be replaced by Odoo standard functions or actively maintained OCA modules (Odoo Community Association), and complex Odoo Studio customizations can be transformed into documented, version-controlled Odoo modules.
This is how we find the optimal solution approach
Functional Fit-Gap: Does the Odoo standard or the OCA module fully cover the business process?
Compatibility: How does the new module integrate into the existing system landscape, and are there conflicts with existing modules, interfaces, or data structures?
Maintenance Status: Is the module actively maintained, ported for current Odoo versions, and supported by a community?
Licensing: Are there any licensing conflicts, usage restrictions, or follow-up costs?
Migration Capability: Does the solution reduce or increase the effort for future Odoo upgrades?
What is an Odoo Audit?
An Odoo Audit is a systematic examination of custom modules, third-party apps, Odoo Studio customizations, and access rights for code quality, security risks, and upgradeability. It becomes necessary when version upgrades are repeatedly postponed, maintenance costs rise without technical justification, or no one can demonstrate who accesses which data.
Process of an Odoo system and security audit at braintec1. Secure takeover: Source code, exported customizations, or a controlled system access.2. Automated technical analysis: Examination of code quality, security, maintainability, compatibility, module dependencies, and Odoo-specific development risks.3. AI-supported analysis: Pattern recognition and prioritization of findings.4. Validation by Senior Odoo Developer: Filtering out false positives, evaluating the results.5. Audit Report: Prioritized findings by risk and effort, impacts and recommendations.
Optionally, we create a separate offer to correct, simplify, standardize, or migrate affected modules.
